Video-for-Windows Applications With DirectX
In our last newsletter we took a look at the topic of 'standardization'. We discussed the need to completely separate the application software from the hardware using the operating system. For image processing purposes, Windows provides DirectX/DirectShow for this task.
On our IEEE 1394 web site, we have grouped together several pieces of hardware and software that are conform to DirectX/DirectShow. Please take a look for yourself:

Many readers of the last newsletter have asked whether they can modify their existing Video-for-Windows based application software. What at first sign looks like a tall order, is actually possible: In fact as of Windows 2000 this happens automatically! The reasoning for this is that Microsoft has a large interest in promoting the transition from Video-for-Windows to DirectShow.
Let us assume that your application software currently runs with a Video-for-Windows device. First of all, connect to your PC another video source that does not ship with a Video-for-Windows driver, but one that is conform to DirectShow. Then, without having to do anything else, you will be able to address your device as if it were a Video-for-Windows device. Many of our customers have used this technique to make their old software compatible with our new Video-to-FireWire converter DFG/1394-1e, for example.

The only area of concern is for end users that have never used Video-for-Windows - they may run into difficulties when they try to activate their old software using the Video-for-Windows procedure.
As always, should you like to speak to us about any topic related to image processing, please get in contact with us.
Best regards
