C-Mount vs. CS-Mount vs. M12
Selecting a compatible lens mount is essential for correct mechanical fit and optical performance. In machine vision, three mount types cover the vast majority of applications: C-mount and CS-mount for housed industrial cameras, and M12 (S-mount) for compact board-level and embedded cameras. Choosing an incompatible mount may prevent the lens from being attached or, in the case of C-mount and CS-mount combinations, prevent the camera from achieving correct focus.
Although all three standards define the mechanical interface between the lens and camera, they differ in flange focal distance, physical size, supported sensor formats, and their typical application areas.
The Three Parameters That Distinguish Lens Mounts
Three key characteristics distinguish these mount standards and influence their typical applications:
Thread specification determines whether the lens physically fits the camera body. C-mount and CS-mount share the same thread (1-inch diameter, 32 threads per inch, or 32 TPI), which allows a C-mount lens to be mechanically attached to a CS-mount camera. M12 uses a much smaller 12 mm metric thread.
Flange focal distance (FFD) is the distance from the mounting flange to the sensor plane, measured when the lens is focused at infinity. This is where C-mount and CS-mount diverge despite sharing the same thread. C-mount has an FFD of 17.526 mm; CS-mount has 12.526 mm. A C-mount lens mounted on a CS-mount camera requires a 5 mm spacer (adapter ring) to position the lens at the correct flange focal distance. Without the adapter, the lens sits too close to the sensor and cannot focus properly at longer object distances.
Aperture adjustment also differs between many lens families. C-mount and CS-mount lenses commonly provide an adjustable iris, allowing the aperture to be optimized during system setup. Many M12 lenses, particularly those intended for embedded vision, use a fixed aperture to simplify the mechanical design and improve resistance to shock and vibration.
C-Mount
C-mount is the standard of choice for most industrial machine vision cameras. The 17.526 mm flange focal distance provides greater flexibility for lens design and supports a broad range of lenses, including models optimized for larger sensors, low distortion, and high-resolution imaging.

C-mount is appropriate when:

CS-Mount
CS-mount uses the same 1-inch 32 TPI thread as C-mount but with a shorter flange focal distance of 12.526 mm. The shorter flange focal distance enables more compact camera and lens designs. CS-mount systems are commonly paired with smaller sensors and compact optics, which are often less expensive than high-performance C-mount lenses.
A C-mount lens can be used on a CS-mount camera by inserting a 5 mm extension ring between the lens and the camera body. This extends the flange distance to the C-mount specification and allows the lens to achieve correct focus throughout its normal focusing range. The reverse is not possible: a CS-mount lens on a C-mount camera body would need to sit inside the camera housing to achieve correct focus, which is mechanically not feasible.
CS-mount is appropriate when:

M12 (S-Mount)
M12, also called S-mount, uses a 12 mm metric thread and is designed for compact board-level cameras. Many M12 lenses, particularly those intended for embedded vision, use a fixed aperture rather than an adjustable iris. Eliminating the aperture ring reduces the size and mechanical complexity of the lens. This makes M12 lenses typically smaller and lighter than comparable C-mount or CS-mount lenses, making them well suited to compact systems and applications subject to vibration or mechanical shock.
When fixed-aperture M12 lenses are used, depth of field and light transmission are determined during lens selection rather than adjusted during installation. For most embedded and board-level applications where the scene geometry and lighting are controlled, this is an acceptable constraint. M12 lenses are often less expensive than high-performance C-mount lenses because they are commonly designed for smaller sensors and compact embedded systems.

Cross-Mount Compatibility
The most common compatibility question in machine vision lens selection is whether a C-mount lens will work on a CS-mount camera. The answer is yes, provided a 5 mm extension ring is installed. The lens and camera share the same thread; the ring corrects the flange focal distance difference.
The combination of a CS-mount camera and a C-mount lens with an extension ring is common in practice because it gives access to the wider range of C-mount optics, including higher-performance options, while using a compact CS-mount camera body.
M12 is not cross-compatible with C-mount or CS-mount without a dedicated adapter. Some CS-mount cameras can accept M12 lenses through a CS-to-M12 adapter, which can produce very wide fields of view at short working distances, useful in certain compact inspection applications.

Frequently asked questions
A CS-mount lens on a C-mount camera body would need to be positioned closer to the sensor than the C-mount flange allows. Because the lens cannot physically enter the camera housing, correct focus at normal working distances is not achievable. This combination is not recommended.
Without the 5 mm extension ring, a C-mount lens on a CS-mount camera can only achieve focus at very short working distances, typically less than 20-30 cm depending on the focal length. This is occasionally useful for close-up macro imaging but is not suitable for standard working distances. Always use the extension ring for normal applications.
At lower resolutions and on smaller sensors, M12 lenses can deliver equivalent image quality to C-mount alternatives. For sensors above 5 MP or applications requiring low distortion across the full frame, C-mount lenses provide greater optical correction. The S-Ultra Series is designed to close this gap for compact systems requiring higher optical precision, but C-mount remains the appropriate choice for the highest-performance applications.
