Color Sensors and Bayer Filters in Machine Vision
At the silicon level, an image sensor is inherently colorblind. A photodiode only counts the number of photons that strike it; it cannot determine whether those photons are red, blue, or green. How the Bayer filter creates color
To generate color data, manufacturers bond a physical grid of microscopic filters directly over the pixel array. The industry standard is the Bayer pattern, named after its inventor at Kodak.
This array divides the sensor into repeating 2x2 grids containing one red, one blue, and two green filters. Why is there twice as much green? The human eye is naturally most sensitive to green wavelengths.
