Monochrome vs. Color Cameras in Machine Vision

A vision system only needs color data if color is the actual defect being inspected. For almost every other industrial application, monochrome is the engineering standard. The choice between monochrome and color cameras dictates a system's baseline sensitivity, spatial resolution, and processing overhead. Color cameras use a microscopic color filter array to capture spectral data, while monochrome sensors leave the silicon completely exposed. Removing that physical barrier allows a monochrome sensor to collect more photons, operate at higher speeds, and resolve sharper edges using the exact same silicon architecture.

How it works: The Bayer filter penalty
